Difference Btw Registered Nursing (RN) and Midwifery (RM)

In plain language, a Registered Nurse (RN) is the award or certificate given to a 3-year trained professional nurse at a school or college of Nursing. Whereas, Registered Midwifery (RM) is an additional (advanced though there is another basic midwifery programme too) qualification to RN which is achieved after another 1 or 2 years of further studies in Nursing and midwifery.

To understand the difference between the two terms and qualifications, there is a need to break things down. In this post you will understand:

  1. what the basic Nursing programme is
  2. what the advanced (post-basic nursing) midwifery programme is
  3. what the basic midwifery programme is

Achieving Registered Nursing (RN)

Schools or colleges of nursing are usually administered by a University Teaching Hospital (UTH). Such hospitals will admit school cert holders and groom them for health care services in a three-year basic nursing course.

After the successful completion of the programme with the hospital’s final exams, the trained nurses will be awarded RN. They are hence qualified to work in any hospital – at home or abroad.

This RN gives such nurses the recognition to apply for BSc Nursing in any university of their choice through JAMB Direct Entry which gives 200 level admissions into Nursing instead of 100 level for those who had not passed through nursing training.

Achieving Registered Midwifery (RM)

After completing the RN, some nurses prefer adding another qualification called Registered Midwifery (RM) in order to be equivalent to their Bsc Nursing counterparts. Here, they are trained further in general health care services and most especially in child delivery (midwifery).

Though there is a basic RM programme too. This may be equivalent to RN too. In order words, the basic RM is not the one taken after already you acquire RN.

Possessing both RN and RM may give you an edge in job and career advancement but it’s usually recognized as being inferior to Bsc Nurse – that will possess three certificates instead. The three certificates for a university graduate of nursing are RN, RM, and BSC (degree) Nursing
